Life after the course

It is very easy to get stuck in a rut, especially when we have to juggle our full-time, super packed jobs with our very busy lives. Life in 2025 has hardly any room for anything, especially when you are trying to master a language while doing everything else.

All is not lost however. In this day and age, it is actually easier to keep practising a language. Below are some of our easy tips for keeping your English language skills alive.

Reading

Many people still like reading for pleasure (yes, as surprising as that sounds!). Any bookworm will tell you that reading is not only relaxing, but a tool to expand one’s vocabulary and grammar knowledge. Why not read in English? There are plenty of graded readers that allow students even with very basic levels to enjoy a classic. Classics are specifically altered to allow students of different levels of English to enjoy the stories just as much, with no pressure to understand the story with such difficult structures.

TV Series/Movies with Subtitles

Couch potatoes cannot be excluded. The fact that they might not like to study doesn’t mean they can’t find other ways to do so. Many researchers proved that lots of people acquired language from watching TV. Forget dubbing! One can watch original British or American movies or series and add subtitles in any language they want. You can start off by watching the show in English, adding subtitles in your own language and switching to English once you are more at ease. However, if you are feeling brave, switch off the subtitles altogether and allow yourself to be fully absorbed in the movie while being fully immersed in the language.

TED Talks

Those who like more professional topics might want to discover the extensive library offered by TED. Topics range from farming to medicine, with speakers from all parts of the world and different expertise giving educational talks. These talks stimulate and satisfy one’s curiosity, leaving people thirsty to find out more. They are perfect for people who like to find themselves tangled in an informative spider’s web, while keeping the English language alive.

News

It is important to keep up-to-date with current affairs. Instead of sticking to your local news in your native tongue, opt for a subscription with international newspapers, or better yet, watch the news. Many popular channels are on the internet and can be accessed 24/7.

Social Media Communities

If you like the idea of socialising with virtual strangers, then maybe joining groups online might be your cup of tea. Facebook is known to have many pages and groups that people from all corners of the world comment on. You might find groups that specifically target your interests where you can share your ideas with other like-minded people.

Language Settings

A very simple, yet effective way to keep the English language part of your daily life is changing your language settings on your technological devices. Laptops, PCs, Tablets, Mobile Phones, PlayStations… you name it! Virtual assistants such as Alexa and Siri are also programmed to speak many different languages. Change the language on your devices by just a click of a button – literally speaking!

Music

“Where words fail, music speaks.” – Hans Christian Andersen. Music is known to have helped lots and lots of people acquire language. It is easily accessible and just fun. Different genres, different topics, different beats, as long as they all contain lyrics, in English.
